What is Shift?
Shift is an AI browser that lets you build a fully custom browsing environment for work, hobbies, and personal projects. It produces a configurable desktop browser where every bar, app, and control can be placed exactly where you want it. Managing multiple accounts, tool stacks, and browsing contexts across a standard browser is chaotic. Shift addresses this by letting you create separate Spaces, each with its own apps, tabs, and extensions, so nothing bleeds into anything else. It also includes a built-in AI layer that reads context across your Spaces, apps, history, and current tabs to help you write, summarize, and answer questions without leaving what you’re doing. Setup can start from a drag-and-drop builder or from ready-made templates. Shift is available as a downloadable desktop app on Mac and Windows.
Features & Benefits
- Custom Browser Layout Builder: drag and drop apps, bars, and controls to any position in the browser window to create a fully custom layout from scratch or from a pre-built template.
- Spaces: create separate browser environments for distinct projects, clients, or contexts, each with its own apps, tabs, and extensions for clean context-switching.
- Multi-Account Management: toggle between multiple accounts for the same app without signing out, keeping separate inboxes and profiles accessible at the same time.
- App Integration: connect 1,500+ web apps and any Chrome extension directly into the browser interface so all tools stay accessible within a single window.
- Shift AI – In-Browser Chat: ask questions, generate drafts, and pull insights from within the browser using an AI layer that draws context from your Spaces, apps, browsing history, and open tabs.
- Shift AI – Intelligent Omnibox: detect questions as you type in the search bar and route them directly to an AI chat session rather than a standard web search.
- Shift AI – Contextual Text Highlighting: highlight any text on a page and trigger an AI prompt with a keyboard shortcut to get an answer in place without opening a new tab or search.
- Shift AI – Privacy Proxy: route AI queries through Cloudflare Privacy Proxy to add an anonymization layer between your input and the underlying LLM.
- Shift AI Customization: configure the AI assistant’s persona and behavior to match a specific role, such as developer assistant or research tool, with the ability to disable AI features entirely in settings.
- Carbon Offset for Apps and Extensions: measure and offset the CO2 emissions generated by apps and extensions running inside the browser.

Real-World Applications
Running multiple client accounts across the same set of tools may require Shift’s Spaces feature to stay organized. Each client can get its own Space with a dedicated app stack and login. Switching between them takes one click. There’s no mixing of tabs, no signing in and out. The AI browser layer can pull context from whichever Space is active to help draft emails, summarize briefs, or answer quick questions without breaking focus.
Researching a complex topic across many sources may produce a need to quickly process and act on what you’re reading. Shift’s contextual text highlighting lets you grab a passage from any page and get an AI-generated explanation or follow-up right where you are. The intelligent omnibox also detects when a search query is really a question, and routes it into an AI chat so you get a direct answer instead of a list of links.
Keeping a work setup completely separate from personal browsing is possible by building out two or more distinct Spaces in this AI browser. Each Space holds its own apps, extensions, and tabs. Nothing carries over. Someone managing both a freelance project and a full-time job could keep both setups inside Shift without any overlap.
Heavy app users who juggle messaging platforms, cloud storage, project tools, and calendars across multiple logins may find Shift’s app integration layer reduces the overhead. All connected apps appear in the browser sidebar. Toggling between accounts for the same service stays in-window. The AI browser tools remain available across all of them, ready to write, summarize, or respond on demand.
